Keeping cool inside your home can be done in a variety of ways besides just turning on an air conditioning unit.

One of the easiest things is to install treatments on your windows. Simple tips including using white window shades, blinds, and drapes which when closed will help reflect the sun’s heat from entering your home. Window films can also be applied to your windows to help reflect the sun. A number of businesses use this technique to save on their cooling costs and it is a solution that can be brought to your own home too. An affordable alternative to window films is to apply cut pieces of bubble wrap to your windows. After cutting the bubble wrap to size just slightly mist your windows with water before applying the cut pieces. Outdoor shutters can also help reflect heat from entering from the outside.

Another great tip is to open windows at night. Select ones that will provide the best cross breeze through your home and then leave interior doors open to allow for good circulation throughout your home. The tip is to make sure that the windows, curtains, and shutters are closed back up before the sun rises.

The best thing is to ensure that you have quality energy efficient windows installed in your home, so that heat is not lost through old windows that are not air-tight. New windows can help you avoid needing to add weather stripping to cracks that might exist around old windows.

Finally, another great tip is to plant vines and bushes near your home which will help block sunlight from heating up the outside of your home and from entering through your windows. These simple solutions can help you turn down the heat in your home without having to turn down the dial on your thermostat.
